Winter Treats

On cold, dark winter days, we often crave sweets and pastries that are rich and spicy. But anyone who assumes this tradition reflects a sense of winter heaviness is on thin ice. On closer inspection, winter treats still reflect the age-old challenge of stocking up for the cold season. They must be both durable and nutritious: honey, for example, extends the shelf life of baked goods, while candied fruits add rich flavor. Almonds and nuts, with their high nutritional value, add a delicious richness. And alongside marzipan, spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and anise, as well as dates and figs, festively highlight the delicacy of the pastries. And let’s not forget: Every body needs energy to stay warm. Since the “beach body” is a summer myth anyway, these treats provide us with a variety of pleasures on winter days—and warm us right down to our souls with their sweet, spicy flavors.
