Interview
Aase Helena Hansen. "We call it future wear."
Aase Helena Hansen and Per Chrois Hansen are the founders and owners of Hansen Garments. While Per's professional background is in the film industry, Aase already had many years of experience in textile design. We spoke with her.
How did the Hansen label come about?
Aase: About ten years ago, on a motorcycle trip from Denmark to southern Spain, Per and I decided it was time to pool our talents. We then decided to produce menswear. We launched our first collection in 2011.
What characterizes Hansen's style?
Aase: Our style is straightforward, the cuts and colors are rather restrained. We combine elements of classic workwear with an upscale "Sunday wardrobe". Our aim is to make men look confident, attractive and friendly. Because we firmly believe that you feel good when you look good - and then you can also do good.
Form follows function? Does that apply to Hansen?
Aase: Absolutely. We design with longevity in mind, and we believe that requires a functional design. We prefer not to use flashy details, colors or buttons. Our collections are easy to combine across seasons. Much of it can be worn all year round and our style has no expiry date. In short: we make clothes. Fashion is something different.
How do you select the materials?
Aase: First of all, the fabrics need a "soul", which is difficult to put into words. I choose them by hand and follow my intuition. For me, it's like painting - the colors and surfaces, compositions and weights have to complement each other and create a holistic, dynamic image. The selection of fabrics and the work on the patterns always run in parallel. We only use synthetic fibers if there is a functional reason for doing so, otherwise we use natural fibers. And we don't compromise on quality, which is why we only work with selected fabric suppliers, mainly from Italy and Japan.
What can you tell us about the production?
Aase: We made a conscious decision to produce in Europe. This gives us the opportunity to visit all the production facilities we work with. Knowing that the working conditions are ethically responsible in every respect means a lot to us. The workers are treated and paid well and the laundries have modern and environmentally friendly equipment.
In short words: What is Hansen?
Aase: We believe in small closets and big personalities. Our aim is to make clothes that age well and are still relevant in the future. We call this "future wear".
