The design of this scarf features a Vichy check. This variation of the check pattern takes its name from the French spa town of Vichy, where it became popular during the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. However, it didn’t achieve worldwide fame until Brigitte Bardot wore a wedding dress featuring the pattern—also known as gingham—in the 1950s. On this scarf, the Vichy check features an additional fine wavy texture. This is due to the very lightweight wool fabric being loosely woven. A narrow fringed border runs around all four sides.

Behind the Moismont label, based in Picardy, France, are Martine and Jacques Bijvoet. Through their fashion, the couple champion authenticity and tradition. It is therefore no surprise that their scarves and stoles, garments, and bags blend French textile design with traditional Indian weaving craftsmanship. After all, the original scarf (which, as we understand it, is worn more like a stole) once made its way from the Indian subcontinent to Europe. And to this day, this scarf-making culture remains very much alive in India: yarn-dyeing, weaving, and printing techniques are passed down there from generation to generation—across three carefully distinguished trades, each of which possesses and safeguards its own unique expertise.
