The gentle way. Smoking with cones
Incense cones are the gentlest way to burn incense. The raw materials for these incense cones are the wood and the fragrant tree resin of the black pine, which is peeled by hand. Fine wild herbs and aromatic plants from our own organic farm at the foot of the Hohe Wand are added, and some of the incense resins used are also hand-pitched. Large aromatic substances are ground, mixed and kneaded by hand with pure lime charcoal from traditional Austrian charcoal burning and, for binding, with makko, a binding agent made from tree bark according to Asian tradition. The incense cones only release their fragrance once they have been lit, as they are not additionally or subsequently scented with essential oils. As with pitching, all work steps are carried out on site and mostly by hand. This ensures that each individual incense cone only contains what it is supposed to contain - purely plant-based ingredients, with the exception of honey and propolis for some fragrance blends.
The incense cone recipes contain only incense herbs from the Central European tradition, which have been put together in two themed sets: "Raunächte" and "Stimmung". To burn the incense cones, either place them in an incense burner or simply on a plate with sand, light them and blow them out again as soon as the cone glows. The gentle smouldering process means that the incense does not burn, but slowly releases its fragrance. The forest incense cones are somewhat "coarser". This is intentional, as aroma is lost with every crushing process. This is why the largest possible pieces of the aromatic ingredients are added to the mixtures. The fragrance may change slightly during the smoldering process, depending on which ingredients have just reached the embers. For a more intense experience, you can also wave the aroma towards your nose with the flat of your hand.
Tradition unites. Incense cones from Waldweihrauch
The Austrian incense manufacturer Waldweihrauch combines two traditions: smoking and pitch making. The ancient craft of pitch-making is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is hardly ever practiced anymore. Extracted from the resin of black pines, pitch used to be an important raw material. It is the basis for these incense cones, which the Waldweihrauch founders Angelika and Florian Gruber make by hand. The two cultural anthropologists discovered their passion for incense burning in their youth and expanded their knowledge of incense substances and their effects on their numerous trips through Europe, India and South East Asia.
