General Information

Harmoniously combined

The Seiffen workshop subtly combines elements of Scandinavian and Erzgebirge tradition in this Christmas "beacon": the straight lines of an isosceles triangle (Swedish candlestick), broken up by the sweep of a circular arch (candle arch). As in the classic Swedish candlestick, the basic shape tapers towards the pointed center, but the details show the rounded curves of the traditional candle arch. This combination results in a simple-looking design that blends harmoniously into any interior style without imposing itself as a "top dog" on the dresser or festive table. The "Swedish chandelier" candle arch reveals its true greatness on the windowsill, of course, where it shines out into the winter darkness with a warm glow. According to popular tradition, it was once the miners in the Ore Mountains who used the arch to show them the way home from their shift underground - today, busy Christmas shoppers, weary souls and dreamy stargazers are guided and welcomed by its light.

This candle arch shines home with warm white, seven-flame electric light. It is made from solid, smoothly sanded beech wood. Even the candle shafts are turned from solid wood - a nice added value compared to the usual plastic shafts. Whether you place this candle arch in the window, on the sideboard in your living room or in the entrance area of your home - here and there, it will be a reminder of the Christmas festival of light and create a warm atmosphere.

As an aside: the name "Schwibbogen" (candle arch) refers to an architectural origin, the suspended arch. The candle arch has been part of the Advent and Christmas season in the Erzgebirge since the mid-18th century. As the first candle arches mainly depicted biblical motifs, their interpretation as a symbol of the heavenly arch is obvious - but at the same time, the arch also takes up a mining tradition: In the last shift before Christmas, the miners hung their burning miners' lamps in a semi-circle on the wall like the mouth of the mine.

Folk art from the Erzgebirge. Seiffen

The fact that a famous wood art developed in the originally densely forested Erzgebirge is not only explained by the availability of the material. As a branch of industry, handicrafts became all the more important as the local mining industry rapidly lost resources and profitability. Folk art slipped into this gap, which mining - no less than Christmas - still shaped with numerous motifs. A center of wood art emerged around Seiffen, where one of the first specialized trade schools was founded in 1853 to promote handicrafts. In the so-called Toy Corner, small and large craft businesses still produce the classics of the folk art of the Erzgebirge: from hoop animals and smoking men to miner figures and nutcrackers to candle arches and wing pyramids.
