General Information

A long way: prunes

It was crusaders from Damascus who brought back the plum of the same name in the 13th century, which was crossed by the monks of the monastery of Nérac with a local variety, resulting in the "prune d'ente" variety (from the Old French "enter", meaning "to graft"). These plums find their ideal conditions in the mild climate of south-western France and in the loess soils around Agen. Highly prized throughout Europe since the 17th century, the plums were shipped from Agen via the Garonne, hence the name Pruneau d'Agen. They are traditionally harvested when the fruit is fully ripe between mid-August and mid-September. They then have a dark purple color with a characteristic blue shimmer, their honey-colored flesh is juicy and delicately sweet. These are supplied by the Carmelite nuns of Beauregard in collaboration with a local cooperative.
