General Information

Curved folds

A special feature of these vases are the folds that are "curved" into the glass using traditional craftsmanship. The production of a folded vase is complex and requires the teamwork of well-coordinated glassmakers. After the heated, viscous glass mass has been blown into a spherical, hollow bowl, it is passed on to the glassmaker's pipe for the second work step. In this step, another glassmaker blows the bowl into a conical shape by adding additional glass mass, which is distributed ("set") accordingly, and transfers it from the pipe to a basting iron. In the third step, the glass is thrown open by vigorously rotating the basting iron around its own axis until it takes on the shape of an open flower; the subsequent slow, sensitive swinging back and forth of the basting iron works the folds into the flower. Finally, the basting iron is knocked off and the maker's logo is stamped on the smoothed out tear-off point.

This makes each vessel unique - as can be seen from the fact that not all vases are the same height and have exactly the same drapery. Lush bouquets of flowers fall naturally into a decorative arrangement.

A shimmer of green. Thuringian forest glass

The original type of the famous Thuringian Forest glass is blown and cast at Farbglashütte Lauscha in the south of the Thuringian Forest. The glass originally owes its characteristic green shimmer to the high proportion of iron oxides in the sands of the Thuringian Forest. The raw material for this highly prized glass specialty is melted from this sand, potash and lime. Another typical feature of Thuringian Forest glass is the so-called "Gispen", air bubbles trapped in the glass, which characterize the centuries-old production process in front of the furnace.

Note:

Certain manufacturing steps are carried out by hand. Slight dimensional and color deviations may therefore occur.
