This half-linen placemat looks like a delicate double weave. But appearances are deceptive, as the colored stripes are merely woven with loose floats and the natural-colored stripes are more densely woven. This results in an overall fine, loose weave. The edges are not edged, but have so-called eyelash fringes all around, which show the color of the natural-colored yarn used in the warp (fineness Nm 40) on the long side. The fringes on the short side have the color of the weft yarn (yarn count Nm 26).

Another special feature: the set is woven from the raw material - 55% linen and 45% cotton - and then "stone washed", i.e. washed with stones, which causes it to shrink to varying degrees (up to 12%). Therefore, if you order several sets, they may differ slightly in size. This shrinkage is already taken into account in the cut, so that the minimum size of the set is 45 × 35 centimeters.

As the northernmost region of France, Nord-Pas-de-Calais is one of Europe's traditional flax-growing areas. The Charvet weaving mill is located in the small town of Armentières, right on the Belgian border, which has been known for the production of linen and cotton fabrics since the Middle Ages. Here one has already specialized in the early 20th century on the linen weaving, the program included, among other things, sailcloth and the robust linen fabrics, from which the French work clothes - the "bleus de travail" and for fishermen the "vareuses" (sailor shirts) - as well as utility textiles for bakeries ("toiles de boulangerie") were made in the past.
