General Information

Peonies

Alongside magnolias and water lilies, peonies (also known as peonies) are among the oldest flowering plants on earth; they originated more than 100 million years ago. We have put together some rare, often historic varieties, as these are usually particularly vigorous and robust. They are less sensitive to May rain and strong early summer winds, and they have a lavish fragrance. Peonies usually flower from the second year and are suitable for cut flowers from the third year. Well cared for plants can live for over 50 years.

Chinese peonies (Paeonia lactiflora)

These peonies originate from ancient China, where they were mentioned as early as 460 BC. The original form was milky white-flowered and - like most of its descendants - strongly scented.

Dividing peonies

The long-lived perennial peonies can grow in the same location for 20 years, but at some point their willingness to flower will diminish. September/October is then the ideal time to divide older canes: The shrubs are cut back, dug up and divided with a knife or spade so that each section has at least 2-3 buds for new growth. Then replant them flat.

  • American variety with unusual flowers
  • For sunny locations with fresh, well-drained soil
  • Growing height 70 to 80 cm

This US-American cultivar from 1992 produces very unusual flowers in May and June. They are up to 15 cm in diameter and densely double with a striking color and pattern: a strong pink marbling on white-pink petals creates the impression of striped flowers, which is always something special and makes an impact both as a specimen and in the border. Added to this is the extraordinary vigor of the plant, which grows to a height of 80-90 cm. Grading 3/5 eyes.

The planting season for peonies is fall. We therefore ship once a year, from the beginning/mid-October to around mid-December.
