You’ll be in good company, as the game of dice has a long history. The oldest known six-sided dice date back to around 3,000 B.C.: In Shahr-e Sukhteh, in present-day Iran, a precursor to the game of backgammon, complete with dice, was unearthed.

The arrangement of the pips commonly used today—where the sum of the opposite sides always equals seven—was not always the standard. However, the sum of seven became the norm because it ensures a slightly more even distribution of weight. Thus, the ideal six-sided die, usually simply called “D6,” has exactly the same probability of landing face up on each of its six sides after a roll: 1:6, or 16.666… percent.
