General Information

What time is it?

“We’ll have all clocks smashed, all calendars forbidden and count hours and moons solely according to the flower clock, only on the authority of blossom and fruit.”
Georg Büchner, Leonce and Lena (1836).

Flowers have an invariable daily schedule: They open and close their blossoms unalterable at the same time (if the location is the right one and the weather conditions do not change abruptly). At noon, for example, the marigold closes its blossoms, while the tiger lily’s blossoms open for the first time. The famous Swedish natural scientist Carl von Linné discovered the phenomenon and had the first flower clock installed in the Botanical Garden of Uppsala in 1745. Legend has it that after looking in the garden, he always announced the correct time with a deviation from under five minutes. In cooperation with the Jan Thorbecke publishing house in Ostfildern, we have developed a flower clock featuring historical illustrations based on Linné’s model. The clock shows the time of day when a selection of flowers and perennials open and close their blossoms – and is thus an excellent aid for creating a blooming flower clock in your garden.
