General Information
Symbolic power
One of Sweden's best-known symbols worldwide is the Dala horse, or "Dalahäst" in Swedish. To this day, these horses are among the most popular motifs and souvenirs of Swedish folk art. Their origins date back to the 17th century: the inhabitants of the historic province of Dalarna carved small wooden horses in winter to earn extra money by selling them while they were not working in the forest or fields. Their cold-blooded horses, the workhorses commonly used in forestry and agriculture, served as models for the carvings. Initially valued as wooden toys, Dala horses gained international fame when a three-metre high Dala horse was exhibited at the 1939 World's Fair in New York.
The Danish label Gry & Sif has adopted the Swedish tradition of the Dala horse - and instead of carving it out of wood, has it felted and embroidered by hand from pure new wool from New Zealand. The design artistically implements the characteristic features of the "Dalahäst": the stocky shape of the cold-blooded horse and the decoration in classic Kurbit painting with its opulent flower and leaf ornaments. This felted Dala horse in vibrant "Falun red" is also adorned with color-coordinated, detailed embroidery from the hooves to the saddle and bridle. Lovingly crafted in this way, the Dala horse spreads its charm, both in a decorative arrangement and as a solitaire - whether on a sideboard or windowsill, on a festively laid table or as a small gift of its own for any occasion.
Fairly combined. Gry & Sif
During her backpacking trip through Nepal, the Dane Gry Staunstrup was immediately captivated by the openness and warmth of the people - and by their high level of craftsmanship. She was able to observe in detail how skillfully and skilfully Nepalese women felted wool into Objekten. The idea of using this skill and combining Nepalese craftsmanship with Danish design was quickly born. And the idea was immediately followed by action.
Since 2000, the company Gry & Sif has been producing a wide range of products from wool felt in Nepal. The designs supplied by Gry Staunstrup are in typical Danish design, as striking as they are discreet and at the same time carefree and cheerful; the production is carried out by Nepalese women using traditional craftsmanship. Now Fair Trade certified, Gry & Sif stands for fair wages, good working conditions and transparency. Only pure new wool from New Zealand sheep is used for the felt products - each of which is unique and handmade.
Note:
Certain manufacturing steps are carried out by hand. Slight dimensional and color deviations may therefore occur.
