The wood of the Bursera graveolens is called Palo Santo (sacred wood) in Spanish. The wood occurs naturally in Mexico and on the Yucatán Peninsula as well as in parts of South America such as Peru and Venezuela, where it has been used for thousands of years. When the wooden sticks burn, the characteristic scent of the resin develops: warm, woody and slightly sweet with a hint of coconut. One end of a stick is set alight and left to burn until some embers can be seen. The liquid resin is then often visible. Wipe out the embers and walk around the room or apartment with the smoking Palo Santo. Then place the stick in a fireproof bowl and allow it to burn out.
