General Information
Against dribbling
The honey spoon is one of the most useful inventions at the breakfast table. Intended as a dispensing aid, it does its job perfectly thanks to the grooves or indentations worked into the functional part, which direct liquid honey in a specific direction - namely onto your breakfast roll (and not onto the tablecloth in a wide radius next to it). In the case of our honey spoon made of wild service tree wood, these indentations are milled into the material. Smoothly sanded and oiled, the surfaces bring out the natural grain of the wood. One advantage of the sugary, sticky liquid that needs to be dispensed is that the hard wood of the service tree has such a fine-pored, dense texture that it is always easy to clean.
Instruments for the kitchen. The wood of the wild service tree
The wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) is a deciduous tree native to Central Europe. This warmth-loving rose plant from the rowan family was once widespread in our forests. Today, the stately tree is rarely found - making the wood of the service tree all the more valuable, which is sold under the name "Swiss pear tree" and is valued by woodworkers for its hardness and natural grain. The dense, even structure of this wood translates into a silky smooth exterior. Its color varies between a reddish brown and a delicate pink, but can also appear dark purple to almost black-brown, giving the wood surface a noble, warm depth, which is particularly effective in furniture making. At the Leipzig-based cabinetmakers Mimikry, wild service tree wood, which is also traditionally used in musical instrument making, is even used to make everyday objects ranging from spatulas to honey spoons. In this way, the everyday is turned into something special, not least because the workshop places great value on processing regional wood from dealers within a radius of 100 kilometers. In the spirit of waste avoidance and resource conservation, all kitchen utensils are made from offcuts that accumulate in the furniture workshop.
