General Information

A Guardian Angel as Mental Focus. The Value of Craftsmanship.

They stand there, modest, almost reverential, the six angel figures made of wood. As a group, they are certainly the most discreet representatives of the Grödnertal valley wood carving tradition in the South Tirol but have been fashioned only with the utmost effort and skill. The wood carving master selects different types of wood to be worked with a chisel. Cherry, maple and walnut grow in the immediate vicinity, and the surfaces of the figures, carefully sanded and smoothly polished, show the beauty of the different timbers in their natural state. As soon as an angel figure has stepped forth from the wood, the craftsman works out the details with the chisel, by emphasising the sweep of the wings and the natural grain of the woods. The expression of each figure is different, even if their design is basically the same, due to the differences in colouring and shading of the wood.

The High Art of Wood Carving.

The Grödnertal valley in South Tirol is famous for the elaborate work of their wood carvers. The handicraft, which began 400 years ago when the farmers in the valley tried to earn some extra money with the carving of simple wood figures, puppets and toys during the long winter months, is still located there today. In time sacred motifs were added, like the detailed oil-painted holy figures offered today.
The manufacturer of our wood carvings in Ortisei learned the wood carving craft from his father, a carver, who was a famous painter, too. The son processes woods in his shop which are drawn exclusively from the immediate vicinity of the village, like cherry, walnut and maple. After the trunks are cut, the wood is left to dry for several years before it is ready to be shaped and carved. The carvers work free-hand according to their own designs and ideas.

A reminder:

these pieces are hand-crafted. Slight deviations from the measurements may occur.

The fine art of wood carving

Val Gardena in South Tyrol is famous for the intricate work of its wood carvers. A craft that began with the carving of simple wooden figures, dolls and toys has been practiced here for around 400 years. During the long winter months, the farmers in the valley were able to earn extra income for their farms in this way. Over time, sacred motifs were added, such as the detailed figures of saints that are still glazed with oil paint today.

The maker of our woodcarvings in Ortisei learned the craft of carving from his father, who was also a famous painter. In his workshop, he and his employees work exclusively with mountain wood from the surrounding area of the village - such as cherry and spruce, walnut, Swiss stone pine and maple - which is carefully selected and left to dry in the air for several years after the trunks have been cut before they can be sculpted and carved. All figures are created by hand according to our own designs and ideas.

Guardian angel as a thought anchor. The value of craftsmanship

The wooden angel figure stands there modestly, almost reverently. It is certainly the simplest representative of the Val Gardena woodcarving tradition - and yet it is made with the greatest craftsmanship. The master woodcarvers select different types of wood to work with the chisel. The wood grows in the local area and is processed in its natural state, with the wooden surfaces carefully sanded smooth and polished. As soon as an angel figure has been carved out of the wood, the craftspeople use the chisel to work out the details, emphasizing the curve of the wings or the natural grain of the material. The basic shape of the figures is the same, the expression changes only with the color and tint of the wood.

Note:

Certain manufacturing steps are carried out by hand. Slight dimensional and color deviations may therefore occur.
