Camaldoli is especially noteworthy among monastic settlements: An entire monastic culture started with the monastery’s foundation that is still alive today. At Camaldoli, the number 11 plays a paramount role: The 11th century and 1,111 m above sea level marked the givens in space and time for St. Romuald when he founded this semi-eremitic branch of the Benedictines northeast of Arezzo.
