doesn’t just hold cushions—on the contrary, it actually stores them. This chest is designed to hold the cushions from your patio chairs and garden loungers during the summer and keep them safe until the next time you need them. The interior dimensions of the chest compartment are specifically tailored to the standard size of typical chair cushions. Our cushion chest is crafted in the woodshop of a social workshop in Delmenhorst from Douglas fir. As is typical of softwood, it remains sufficiently weather-resistant even when untreated, thanks to its natural resin content. The chest body is assembled from individual boards joined by tongue-and-groove joints. The craftsmen rely on the tried-and-true frame construction method, which provides the entire structure with additional strength and prevents the wood from warping. The chest lid, on the other hand, is a two-piece design and can be opened from either side, making it easy to slide in chair cushions and other items. And it gets even better: the chest and lid are so sturdy overall that this piece of furniture can just as easily be used as a seat (and is more than just a makeshift solution). And if you don’t want to store cushions and pillows, there’s of course plenty of room for the family’s favorite garden toys, a bag of small animal feed, or your most-used garden tools. Speaking of tools: our Douglas fir garden cabinet, built in the same way, is a perfect match.

Douglas fir is naturally a wood with many knots. You can see this in this beautiful chest as well, because we decided not to have these traces of nature removed. The wood is used just as it grows. However, you should be aware that untreated wood will gray over time, which can lead to cracking. Resin naturally present in the wood can liquefy and seep out when exposed to heat; hardware and other metal parts may tarnish. All of this is part of the wood’s natural adaptation process and therefore does not constitute grounds for a complaint. Our tip: Choose a sheltered outdoor location for your storage chest and do not expose the furniture to full weathering for extended periods. You can delay the typical graying of the wood by applying a maintenance oil (just remember to always coat the wood on the outside and inside with the same product). One final note: Our storage chest is built without ventilation slots, so you should only store your chair cushions when they are completely dry; otherwise, mildew stains may form, especially on materials sensitive to moisture.
