Glass icicles are a sparkling eye-catcher on the Christmas tree. Unlike the hollow, often ornate versions commonly found on the market, our glass icicles are solid and designed to look natural. The glassblowers at the “ Farbglashütte Lauscha ” have mastered the art of shaping these icicles from glass. The first step involves melting crystal glass in the glassworks furnace. A well-coordinated pair of pullers then hand-draws triangular rods up to 45 meters long from the molten glass; the profile of these rods later forms the icicle’s characteristic edges. Once the glass rods have cooled on the drawing table, they are broken into sections about one meter long.

In the second step, the tip of a triangular rod is heated in the flame of a glass torch. Section by section, the glassblowers heat the rod, pulling and twisting the honey-soft glass to achieve the icicle’s spiral shape. As soon as the icicle reaches the desired length, the glassblower melts it off the rod and uses the soft end to stretch it out and bend it into an eyelet with a deft flick of the wrist. Finally, each icicle is annealed overnight in a cooling oven to relieve tension in the glass and ensure its long-term stability.

In this way, each individual icicle becomes a unique example of the fine art of glassblowing. Whether hanging from a branch in the window or on a decorated Christmas tree, the crystal glass icicles reflect the light of the surrounding candles, countering the darkness of the winter season with their sparkle and shine.

Certain manufacturing steps are carried out by hand. Slight dimensional and color deviations may therefore occur.
