Before modern rollers were invented, paper had to be smoothed and compacted after drying. In the early paper mills of the Renaissance, this was done using water power and mechanical hammer mills. This hammering left characteristic, slightly wavy indentations on the paper’s surface. Having been increasingly pushed into the background over the centuries, the delicate “hammered texture” is now a hallmark of high-quality textured papers. In the 19th century, Italian paper manufacturers in particular developed fine papers with an embossed, faceted texture, which quickly became the standard for diplomatic dispatches and high-end correspondence.
