The background: In the early days of mining, these little yellow songbirds went underground and saved the lives of many miners. This is because birds react much more quickly to rising levels of life-threatening carbon monoxide. If the feathered companion grew quiet and tired, or even fell from its perch, quick action and an ascent to better air were required.

BIRDIE continues the work of these little birds and pays tribute to their efforts in an elegant way: hung in the living room, bedroom, or children’s room, the integrated precision sensor—made in Switzerland—continuously measures the air quality in the room. If it’s good, the stylized canary-yellow bird sits upright; if the CO₂ level rises too high, it tips upside down. This signals that oxygen is needed and the windows should be opened immediately. When the CO₂ level then drops and air quality improves, the bird rights itself and sits cheerfully in position.

Unlike its counterparts from the mining industry, BIRDIE is battery-powered. The battery lasts up to six months and is charged via USB-C. Made of plastic or, in the wooden version, Danish oak.
