Baking soda goes by many names, in addition to baking soda, baking soda, sodium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate, the chemical formula NaHCO3 and correspondingly sodium hydrogen carbonate is the clearest name. However, it should not be confused with washing soda, sodium carbonate, which itself is just as versatile in the household.

- It is a sodium salt (as is table salt) and has an alkaline pH value when dissolved in water. This makes it ideal for neutralizing acids - Baking soda releases carbonic acid when it is heated or comes into contact with acids or moisture and is therefore used as a leavening agent - And baking soda is a good fat solvent and water softener, which is why it is also ideal for making your own cleaning agents and detergents.

Baking soda in boiling water makes tea and coffee more digestible; a pinch in cucumber salad helps against belching after eating it. Beans and pulses soften more quickly and become more digestible, cabbage and spinach retain their green color when a little baking soda is added to the water. It dissolves stubborn encrustations in pots and pans, acts as an odor absorber (e.g. in the refrigerator) and as a fabric softener. As a toothpaste, scrub or deodorant, for sunburn or insect bites, for hyperacidity and heartburn; for fungal diseases on plants, against ants - the list of possible applications is long. In combination with soda, vinegar and citric acid, a whole range of household cleaners and aids for the garden, workshop and garage can also be produced. Supermarkets and health and beauty retailers offer an overabundance of cleaning products, while the industry preaches that every application and every surface needs a cleaner specially developed for the respective purpose. Nevertheless, it’s much simpler than that. Please make no mistake; the basic ingredients of household chemistry are ultimately the same as they were 50 years ago. Plus, when it comes to the eternal ‘new, with improved formula’, the reason is rather a marketing brainstorm than a chemical-technical progression.
