A back scraper is certainly one of those traditional, almost forgotten utensils that can only be found in very few households. The fact that it is still in demand and is still manufactured proves its extremely practical use and places it in the group of timeless, albeit peculiar items. The warm, tactile horn for the back scratcher comes from Watussi cattle. It is made by the Viennese Hornmanufaktur Petz, largely by hand. After cutting and shaping, each stick is carefully rounded and deburred and the horn surface is then polished in several steps. The coloring and grain of each back scratcher is different - each piece is unique.

Since 1862, the knowledge and experience of the manual processing of horn has been passed from generation to generation, today Thomas Petz, grandson of the last Austrian horn comb guild’s master, leads the family business and manufactures on the machines of the grandfather. All the work processes in the treatment of the horn - about 30 different steps - are performed in full in the Viennese operations of the Petz family, from the separation of the horn tip of the basic material through to the final fine polishing of the tips of the comb teeth and spaces between them with powdered pumice stone.

Horn is a natural product which always differs in colouring and graining. So products made of this material are never identical and thus unique in colour and marking. The product should be treated regularly, with our horn balm for example.

This product is an example of genuine handicraft; therefore, minor deviations in size and colour may occur.
