The authentic beret has long been popular among artists and intellectuals, which is why it is said that a head covered by one is rarely completely empty. The beret we offer comes from Laulhère, a company founded in 1838 in Oloron-Sainte-Marie at the foot of the Pyrenees. There, at the company’s historic headquarters, the finest merino wool is processed into raw berets on in-house developed beret knitting machines. The ends of the weft threads protruding in the center later form the indispensable “nipple.” The subsequent fulling process is crucial, during which the raw beret gradually shrinks to its final size—a process that requires experience, skill, and meticulous handwork. This process creates the durable, crumple-resistant, warm, water-repellent, yet breathable fine felt for which a good beret is rightly celebrated.
